Scientific description

Scientific descriptionNudges are positive incentives placed in our environment to help individuals make the 'right' choices, for their own benefit and/or that of society as a whole. Public authorities see them as an "economic" tool for changing our behaviour. But who defines what is a "good" choice? And a 'good' choice for whom?

Nudges are a term used to describe an influential tool designed to change people's behaviour on a day-to-day basis, in the form of a discreet incentive. The Nudges approach consists of pragmatically encouraging an individual to act, without ever seeking to coerce them, a kind of positive incentive, or even benevolent manipulation. The aim is to influence without constraint, by predictably changing the decisions and behaviour of individuals by modifying the architecture of their choice, without prohibiting other options and without confronting them head-on by allowing them to avoid, easily and without cost, the solution proposed by the Nudge.

Nudges are being used in an increasingly wide range of fields, from consumerism to architecture, from transport to education, but are they just a fad? Or are they a pragmatic tool for public policy? Another way of making decisions? A lever for well-being or even the Common Good?

In the field of education, can the Nudge theory be a lever for transforming teaching and/or practices? Can we find levers for action to develop a taste for reading, to encourage learners to get involved and persevere in their training, to promote inclusion, to use the school environment to combat harassment, to support vulnerabilities, to transform them into strengths or any other educational policy objective?

The aim of this first international scientific conference on Nudge and education is firstly to review the scientific state of the art, backed up by practical examples from the field, and then to identify together, practitioners and researchers, beyond the salient results, areas for collaborative work in the direction of Nudge engineering within schools. Three themes will be explored during the conference:

Nudges and education: why and how?
What applications for what results?
Nudges: theoretical underpinnings and ethical criticisms.
